Houtlander is a Johannesburg-based furniture design and manufacturing company renowned for its innovative approach to blending modern technology with traditional craftsmanship. Founded by Phillip Hollander, the company has garnered international acclaim for its timeless designs and commitment to quality.

Our Story
The journey began when Phillip Hollander, a passionate hobby carpenter, participated in a Swedish design exchange. This experience ignited his desire to elevate South African design on the global stage. In 2017, after a year of meticulous planning and crafting, Houtlander unveiled its debut collection at the 100% Design Showcase, where the Coronation Bench won the 'Best Furniture Design' award.
This initial success opened doors to global recognition. The Coronation Bench was acquired by Karen Roos of Babylonstoren, and the company gained mentorship from design legend Gregor Jenkins. Houtlander expanded its range, with pieces showcased in prestigious venues such as Milan's Salone del Mobile and Paris's Pompidou Centre.
Our Philosophy
At Houtlander, we believe that furniture has the potential to change the world and the way we live in it. Our mission is to create exquisitely made pieces that capture the imagination and stand the test of time. By merging modern technology with age-old crafting techniques, we ensure that each piece is not only functional but also a work of art.
Recent Developments
In February 2025, Houtlander expanded its presence by launching a new showroom in Cape Town. The event coincided with the unveiling of their mycelium materials exploration project, highlighting the company's commitment to sustainable design practices.
Looking Ahead
Houtlander's journey is far from over. With a foundation built on innovation, collaboration, and a deep respect for craftsmanship, we continue to push the boundaries of possibility in furniture design. Our pieces are not just furniture; they are stories, experiences, and a testament to South Africa's rich design heritage.
